@Tarek: Water underground and above ground has no frontiers. The only way to tackle this problem is through regional and international efforts. We can also apply the same thinking to air and atmoshphere which are also shared by all humans. I therefore don't think that water is the only issue that should be considered at a global scale. I think climate change should be as well.

Water issues (pollution, resources...) are crucial. Oil can be replaced one day by other types of energy but without water...

Tarek, I also liked your expression "Dead sea to survive" :-)

Thanks guys for drawing attention to this highly important topic.

Water is clearly going to be the primary source of conflict in this century. What I find interesting is that, even in those countries which do not a priori risk any major water shortage (e.g. UK, Switzerland), citizen-oriented awareness campaigns are always going on.

Still, water is the only problem I would agree that multinational action (as opposed to national policy) is the most important way to tackle. We need for example North-Africa-wide agreements on the management of ground-water. Israel and its neighbouring countries, as you rightly mentioned, will have to find out a viable solution in order for the Dead Sea to "survive". And of course, the global community will need to explore ways in which Canadian and Greenlandic ice can stop melting!

Another problem which I would like to raise is water pollution. We tend to forget that, ultimately, most of the industrial, agricultural, and human waste affects water resources. What I would suggest, therefore, is not to deal with water as a separate matter, but as "the" only environmental issue which is affected by all others!
