A year ago, our vision of creating an informative blog on sustainable development in Tunisia took shape. We first started with a modestly designed Blogspot blog and created a virtual place for environmental awareness and dialog amongst our fellow citizens.  KEN has proved to be a remarkable way to communicate with Tunisians (and others) all around the world to discuss issues relating to energy, natural resources, climate change, society, culture, education, science, art, and many other topics.  It is composed of a vibrant team of enthusiastic Tunisians seeking efficiency, creativity and a sustainable living. Congratulations! Keep up the good work.  We took the responsibility with a lot of enthusiasm and commitment since all of us shared the same core of values and vision development wise. And now a year after, El-Khadra adventure has been a rewarding learning experience. 

With hundreds of readers worldwide as of March 2006 and great feedbacks and contributions received by email or through the blog’s comment section, we decided to go one step further and created a more professional blog.  Indeed, the highly technical weblog it was a year ago has turned itself into to a dynamic platform to exchange information, ideas and suggestions on the future of the environment in our country and the world.  It is quiet clear then that KEN is not only a venue for the academic and the practitioner, but also a site for the public at large. Indeed, the environment is not one of those policy issues that could be tackled from the comfort of armchairs. It is primarily a matter of general interest, public engagement, and shared responsibility. The sustainable development perspective within which all articles have been placed has successfully promoted the participatory culture upon which the KEN venture is based, and will continue to attract wider audiences and emphasize the role of everyone in preserving the environment from the threat of degradation. The utmost hope is to maximize the prospects of debate and bring along as many opinions as possible to better grasp the issues at stake and the ways in which they could be addressed timely and efficiently.

By this first milestone, the KEN team has published 72 articles most of which in English and French. We have also launched our first project aiming to procure websites to Tunisians NGOs and help them better transmit their environmental message. Our audience has reached an average of 80 readers a day and continues to grow (total of 12320 as of December 3, 2006).

We have been privileged to get the support of like-minded Tunisians who share the same enthusiasm and who greatly helped us in this endeavour. On behalf the KEN team, I would like to this opportunity thank them all for their contribution and time.

As action begins with awareness, El-Khadra aims and will aim at helping make an environment-literate society both in Tunisia and hopefully in the world.  In the next year, we hope to continue in the same line and bring an even better product to our faithful readers and more tangible actions to our country.

Un an déjà!  Le 4 décembre 2005 nous avons démarré cette extraordinaire aventure.  Rym et moi avons initié le processus KEN avec une idée très simple : contribuer au développement durable en Tunisie.  Depuis Slim a rejoint en février 2006 après quoi 4 autres membres ont rejoint le groupe.  Nous avons essayé de soulever différents points importants reliés au développement durable et il s’avère que l’équation est toujours la même : Environnement (émissions de gaz nocifs, pollution, etc), société (comportements, moins de biens publiques, éducation sociale « passive », etc.) et économie (politique énergétique, optiques de commerce basées sur la maximisation d’un profit non « soutenable », etc.) sont les moteurs d’un développement durable.

KEN a fait beaucoup de chemin depuis son lancement.  Le weblog qui était très technique s’est transformé en une plateforme dynamique pour l’échange d’informations, d’idées et de suggestions portant sur le futur de l’Environnement dans notre pays et dans le monde.  Il est donc clair que KEN n’est pas seulement un espace pour l’académicien et le professionnel, mais un site destiné au grand public.  En effet, l’Environnement ne fait pas partie de cette palette de sujets que l’ont peut régler depuis le confort de son bureau.  C’est avant tout une question d’intérêt général, d’engagement public et de responsabilité partagée.  La perspective de développement durable qui émerge de tous les articles a effectivement promu la culture participative qui constitue le fondement du projet KEN, et elle continuera à attirer des audiences plus vastes en mettant l’accent sur le rôle de tout un chacun dans la protection de l’Environnement de la menace de dégradation.  L’objectif ultime est de maximiser les canaux du débat et de ramener autant d’opinions que possible afin de mieux comprendre les enjeux à venir et les moyens d’y faire face à temps et avec efficacité.

Avec des lecteurs de partout dans le monde (plus de 45 pays), nous avons reçu de très bons commentaires ainsi que des suggestions intéressantes.  Nous avons aussi posté pas moins de 72 articles pendant cette année, dont la majorité est en anglais et en français. 

Qu’est ce qu’on peut faire? Avant de répondre à cette question, il faut comprendre que durabilité rime avec persévérance et long terme. A KEN nous pensons que même les petites contributions ont un impact positif dans la mise en place d’une structure pour un développement durable « adéquat ». Pour ce faire nous informons –du mieux qu’on peut- nos lecteurs des événements, nouvelles, ou découvertes reliés au développement en Tunisie. Nous avons entamé un nouveau projet « Concours de Conception Web au Profit des ONGs Tunisiennes » qui sera finalisé en Fevrier 2007.  Toute aide de nos fidèles lecteurs serait plus qu’appréciée !

Pour terminer, cette citation de Cornelio Sommaruga, Président du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge résume bien la vision de KEN, « Il n’y a pas de fatalité. Nous pouvons, j’en ai l’intime conviction, opposer au pessimisme de l’intelligence, l’optimisme de la volonté. Car il ne s’agit plus de rêver d’un monde meilleur. Il faut y œuvrer ».
